The Esther Fast

Queen Esther before King Xerxes ( Abstract)

Esther 4:16 : Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!”

After fasting for 3 days and 3 nights, Queen Esther appeared before the king and found favour instead of condemnation! Usually, appearing before the king without being summoned could have resulted to death. Not only did she find favour before the king, but he offered to grant her request even if it meant upto half of his kingdom! Esther acted in wisdom and summoned the king and Haman to a banquet. She was waiting for the right time to reveal her true identity to the king and request for the deliverance of her people. What wisdom! If you read the whole chapter, there are unremarkable things you will notice that came as a result of this fast. I will outline them below.

Rain of favour

Esther had not seen her husband the king for many days and after the fast, the king’s love for his wife was rekindled strongly again. He lifted his sceptre to Queen Esther and spoke kindly to her. Remember he had many concubines and probably that’s one of the reasons that he had not gone to his wife’s chambers for many days! The king went further to grant her request!

Remembrance

The king could not sleep and he remembered that Mordecai had once saved his life. He called Haman and commanded him to honour Mordecai by cladding him in royal attire and sitting him on his donkey and walking all round the city declaring that Mordecai was the man that the king wished to honour. Haman was Mordecai’s enemy! When God favours you, your enemies have no choice but to do the same too!

Defeating enemies

The gallows which Haman had created for Mordecai to be hanged became his hanging spot instead! All his sons were killed and every enemy that had prepared to massacre the Hebrews fell in their spot. Tables turned!

Promotion and Honour

Mordecai was lifted up from the position of the gate keeper to become second in command to the King! Queen Esther is still remembered for her act till date.

There are mountains we come across in life which can never move hard as we pray if fasting is not applied. Remember that even Jesus said, ‘ This kind can not go without prayer and fasting.’ Some battles can easily be prayed through but others need prayer and fasting!
