Different Toppings Ideas For Baked Potatoes

Who doesn’t love a good jacket potato? There are plenty of ways to enjoy them with these tasty jacket potato fillings. Easy to make, super delicious and versatile, the humble jacket potato is great for a quick mid-week dinner. Kids will love picking out different toppings to change things up a bit.

How to cook jacket potatoes

You can cook jacket potatoes in a few different ways. Jacket potatoes can be cooked in the microwave, oven, slow cooker and even on the BBQ.

There are a few different methods of cooking a jacket potato but the quickest way is to pre-cook the jacket potato in the microwave. Pierce your potato with a fork or knife all over the potato skin and then wrap in kitchen towel and cook for 5-7 minutes (depending on the size of the potato). Once your jacket potato has been pre-cooked, carefully brush with olive oil and place on a baking tray in the middle of the oven. Set the oven to about 200C and cook for about 25-30 mins.

Topping / filling ideas for jacket potatoes

While just mashing them up with butter and cheese is delicious, here are more inspirations to help you spice up the humble spud for supper.

1) Tuna and sweetcorn

This topping is easy to make and so tasty. Simply mix tinned tuna with slightly boiled sweetcorn and mayonnaise. Butter and salt your spud and fill it up with this topping.

2) Chili con carne

Let’s go Mexican. Chili con carne doesn’t only go well with rice but it’s super delicious on jacket potatoes too.

3) Curry

Do you have any left over curry? Try it on spuds. Whether it’s Korma, Tikka or vegetable curry, you are going to enjoy it on jacket potatoes.

4) Baked beans and cheese

Simply delish! Baked beans are not just for your toast and breakfast. Put them on a spud with some cheese and enjoy.

5) Broccoli and cheddar

Enjoy the goodness of steamed broccoli with cheddar or any cheese of your choice on a jacket potato.

6) Green bean casserole

Use up leftover green bean casserole. I have found that it tastes even better on day two. Top each potato, then sprinkle them with French-fried onions for extra crunch.

7) Bacon, tomatoes and chives

This is such a tasty topping. Just drizzle a split baked potato with Ranch dressing, covering the whole thing with crumbled bacon, chopped tomatoes and chives.

8) Spicy turkey

Turkey mince is one of my favourites. It is cheap and lean. Flavour Mexican-style chilli with cumin and paprika and serve in a baked jacket potato.

9) Pizza style

Is there anything that doesn’t taste incredible when pizza-fied? From stuffed mushrooms to roasted egg plant. Name them all and of course jacket potatoes. These baked potatoes are coated with cheddar, mozzarella and pepperoni slices, then baked for an additional 1-2 minutes; just long enough for the cheese to melt.

10) Chicken and mushroom

Liven up your jacket potato with this tasty and creamy filling.

11) Spicy dhal

Cook red lentils with cumin, mustard seeds and turmeric and serve with a fluffy jacket potato and chutney.

12) Black beans and guacamole

Black beans are nutrient dense and delicious. This filling might turn out to be your best. Enjoy!
