The Covid-19 pandemic has left many battling with anxiety, stress and depression. Children especially have faced a hard time because they don’t understand why they have to stay at home and not play out with their peers. With a second intense lockdown looming, it is important to help children to cope during these uncertain times.

10 ways to help children cope with Covid-19 and isolation

1) Give them love and attention

Continue reassuring them and answering all questions that they may have. They will ask many questions about the pandemic and it’s your duty to answer them all accurately and in a way that they can understand.

2) Make opportunities for them to play and relax

Provide numerous playful and relaxing activities indoors in cases of isolation and take them out to play and get some fresh air as long as they can keep the distancing rules.

3) Keep regular routines and schedules

Keeping a regular familiar routine pattern even in lockdown will help calm children and reduce anxiety levels. They won’t feel like a lot of changes are happening too quickly.

4) Keep them close to their parents/care givers

It’s the time that parents and care givers should get even more close to their children. Constantly reassuring them now is very important. In cases where hospitalisation takes place, keep in close contact through the phone. It’s important for your child to continue hearing your reassuring voice.

5) Learn to fully explain what’s going on

Explaining about the pandemic to them especially in a way that they can fully understand is called for now. This will help them know what the world is dealing with and will give them a sense of responsibility in staying safe and keeping others safe.

6) Be a role model

Actions speak louder than words. Your children are constantly copying what you do with or without your knowledge. Take breaks, sleep well, eat well and exercise.

7) Spend time with your children

Spending time with your children and doing meaningful activities with them will help them to stay calm.

8) Teach them how to stay safe

Constantly teaching your children how to stay safe during this pandemic is vital. Show them how to wash their hands properly, how to cover their mouths when sneezing, social distancing and if they are old enough, how wear masks to protect themselves and others.

9) Remind them about the rules and regulations

All these rules must be overwhelming for little minds. Constantly remind them that the rules are only there to keep them safe and they won’t last forever.

10) Keep them in close contact with family and friends via telephone

It’s tough enough that they can not see their grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends etc for unprecedented periods of time. Hearing their voices through the phone or seeing them on FaceTime or Zoom can make them feel much better.

How to Get Children to Eat Healthy

Many children don’t know the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods. It is the parents’ duty to teach and show them the difference. It is a proven fact that children who eat healthy balanced meals daily, fall ill less often. Healthy food choices will support their continuous growth. It goes without saying that, healthier food choices for children are vital.

What is a healthy diet?

A healthy diet is one that helps maintain or improve overall health. A healthy diet provides the body with essential nutrition: fluid, macronutrients, micronutrients, and adequate calories.A healthy diet may contain fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and includes little to no processed food and sweetened beverages. The requirements for a healthy diet can be met from a variety of plant-based and animal-based foods, although a non-animal source of vitamin B12 is needed for those following a vegan diet.

18 Tips to Get Children to Eat Healthy

1) Make a schedule

It helps to create a daily schedule. Children should eat every 3 to 4 hours. They should have 3 full well balanced meals, at least 2 snacks and lots of fluids everyday. That will ensure that they receive their daily intake of essential nutrients.

2) Good quality breakfast

Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day. Breakfast that is rich in fibre helps in preventing constipation. When running out of time, whole grain breakfast cereals with milk or yoghurt are a good choice.

3) Plan dinners ahead of time

This will ensure that healthy and balanced food recipes are not compromised. You can cook meals for the whole week or for a few days in the week and freeze them. Warm them up at dinner times.

4) Introduce new foods gradually

Children are new food phobic by nature. By introducing new foods slowly in their daily diets will help them take to the taste.

5) Get children involved

Involving children in food shopping and cooking will get them more interested in eating the foods they have picked and helped with cooking. This is especially applicable for older children and teens.

6) Cut back on buying junk food

By buying much less junk food will ensure children eat the healthier available foods instead.

7) Allow treats once in a while

Forbidden things can seem more appealing. Allowing children to indulge in treats like sweets and chocolates once in a while is a healthy balance. They won’t appear so appealing after all. This will prevent children from over indulging when the opportunity presents itself.

Educational and Fun Indoor Activities for Children

Whether it’s a weekend at home, adverse weather conditions, coming off school for half term or been forced to stay off school during these uncertain times as a result of Covid-19, children can get bored very easily. Mine never shy away from saying when they get bored. If the weather conditions are adverse as they have been here lately, it becomes impossible to even go to the park. It rains a lot in autumn and it’s getting colder too. Indoor activities for children can break that boredom. I have tried a number of educational and yet fun filled activities with my children and they work perfectly every time.

1) Doing homework online

There are lots of sites online that offer homework for kids of different ages. I’ve tried They offer Maths and English from the reception/nursery stages through to high school. They even offer complementary virtual stickers to encourage and congratulate children when they perform well.

2) Art

Children love drawing and painting. Get the paint out and watch their little faces beam with excitement as they draw and paint.

3) Cooking and Baking

Cooking simple meals like Macaroni and cheese with older kids is not only fun but educational too. Teach them how to bake and perfect the skill with time. They get so chuffed eating meals they have cooked or baked.

4) Crafts

Kids love making cards. Making cards at home is fun. Get them making birthday, thanksgiving and Christmas cards depending on the occasion. You can delve into making accessories like bracelets or birthday hats with them too.

5) Doing some P.E lessons

6) Learn a new skill

Learning new skills can be great fun. You can teach your children to play the key board, guitar, drum etc. Some younger children might want to learn things like putting shoes on right, tying the shoe laces or even dressing themselves up properly.

8) Just dance

Sort out clothes that do not fit them anymore and are still in good condition. They could be winter coats, shoes, clothes and toys that they don’t play with anymore. Arrange for all these to be donated to charity shops. This will teach your children the act of being charitable to those in need.

Reminding them of skills you taught them before and letting them do them again can be a good way to ensure that they don’t forget. Get them tying their shoe laces again, loading the dishwasher or washing machine etc.

Analyzing specific components in matter using a microscope at home is an interesting way of getting children to like science. There are lots of basic scientific experiments which you can practice at home with your children. Show them how the law of gravity works. Mixing water and oil whereby because oil is less dense than water, it floats and as such the two don’t mix. Show them how to generate electric energy using potatoes just to name a few experiments.

This is a fun activity and a good skill for children to learn. It will benefit them as they grow up.
